Looking Back at the Good News from Summer 2023

Friday Night Lights are Back! … and so is SchoolMed!

Whether classes are in session or just around the Labor Day corner, one thing is already clear — SchoolMed has closed more gaps in children’s care in the first month of the school year than ever before!

That means more time in class, more opportunities for learning, and more communities with access to quality care — and we’re just getting started!

Getting the word out about SchoolMed has never been easier, too! Partner schools gained access to a new suite of materials this month, and we love to see the creative ways you are highlighting school-based health services!

As we continue a great and healthy start to 23/24, here’s one more look back at the Good News from the summer.

Good News!

Your SchoolMed Monthly Insight: Beat the Heat!

It’s always hot during the summer, but if you’re feeling like it’s even hotter than usual this summer … you’re right. According to the World Meteorological Organization, this has been the hottest summer on record in the United States, with July the hottest month on the planet!1

As students get back in the classroom, they can still be susceptible to the heat. It might be when they’re going or leaving school as they wait for the bus, during recess, or after-school sports practices. Wherever it might be, there are signs to heat related issues that you can watch out for.

Here’s what to look for:2

  1. Heavy sweating
  2. Cold, pale, and clammy skin
  3. Fast, weak pulse
  4. Nausea or vomiting
  5. Muscle cramps
  6. Dizziness

Here’s what to do when you see it:

  1. Move to a cool place
  2. Loosen your clothing
  3. Apply cool damp cloth to your head and wrists
  4. Sip Water
