Did you know?
- Originally known as Decoration Day, this holiday was created to honor the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the Union in the Civil War.
- While Memorial Day is seen as a time of somber time of remembrance for all who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, it is also a time to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.
- Throughout the United States, cemeteries are decorated with flowers, flags and wreathes.
- The flag of the United States is often raised quickly to full mast, lowered to half-mast slowly, then raised to fly at its full height at noon on Memorial Day. Slowly lowering it to half-mast represents the soldiers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Raising it again symbolizes the continued strength to continue to fight on, and that no life was lost in vain.
