School Health Advocate of the Month — October 2024

Thank you for your dedication to closing the gaps in children’s healthcare!

At Arlington ISD, student health and well-being are top priorities, and Joanna Call, RN, BSN, exemplifies this commitment at Arlington High School. With vast experience and a passion for student success, Nurse Joanna works tirelessly to keep students healthy, engaged, and ready to learn.

Nurse Joanna’s impressive background includes time at Cook Children’s in the PICU and alongside neurologists, where she developed expertise in identifying seizure types. Her journey then led her to school nursing, serving as a resource nurse across 25 schools and supporting students from kindergarten through high school.

Building on this foundation, Joanna became a leader in Cook’s STAR Kids program, managing the Medically Dependent Children’s Program (MDCP). This role sharpened her skills in supporting students and families facing medical challenges and led her to advocate for student health needs at the state and local levels.

Today, Joanna’s wealth of experience fuels her work at Arlington High, where she understands her vital role in students’ academic success. “Health plays a major role in academic success,” she says. “Students need to feel their best to focus and learn effectively.”

Nurse Joanna’s journey uniquely equips her to support Arlington High students in reaching their full potential—both in and out of the classroom.

SchoolMed has been a success on her campus, thanks to the trust that district families and staff have in Nurse Joanna and her clinic assistant, Tiffany Rogers. The number of students able to see a provider, receive necessary medication, and return to class has increased since implementing the program this year.

“SchoolMed fills the missing piece in traditional school clinics. With the ability to offer visits with practitioners, complete testing, and order or administer medication, our clinics are stronger than ever, supporting our mission to create a healthier Arlington,” Nurse Joanna explains.

At Goodside Health, we are grateful for nurses like Joanna, who are relentless in their advocacy for student health and well-being.

Thank you, Joanna Call, for your dedication to students and closing the gaps in children’s healthcare.
