School Health Advocate of the Month — January 2025

Thank you for your dedication to closing the gaps in children’s healthcare!

In the heart of Joshua, Texas, just south of Fort Worth, you’ll find Plum Creek Elementary—home to dedicated School Nurse Jennifer Stensby, LVN. For nine years, Nurse Stensby has been a cornerstone of the campus, bringing her expertise and unwavering care to ensure students’ health and well-being remain a priority. Through her years of experience, Nurse Stensby has seen firsthand how closely a student’s academic success is tied to their physical health.

“Students thrive when they’re actively engaged in learning,” she shared. “But when they don’t feel well, their mood and performance can take a hit. By arranging a SchoolMed visit, getting a quick diagnosis, and starting treatment, we can help them bounce back and succeed.”

Her understanding—that health fuels learning—is what sets school nurses like Nurse Stensby apart. A commitment to connecting health and education strengthens not only her students but also the entire Joshua ISD community. It takes a village to raise and support children, and Nurse Stensby credits her success to the collaboration of a caring and supportive school community.

“I’m lucky to work with an amazing Principal, Vice Principal, and staff,” she explained. “Our teachers are quick to notice when a student isn’t feeling well and send them to me. And our office staff is always ready to step in—whether it’s helping a sick student or supporting me when things get busy.”

This kind of teamwork gives families peace of mind, knowing their children are cared for at school. Parents have shared glowing feedback about SchoolMed’s ability to streamline care, with Nurse Stensby noting that “the process is so much faster than taking a child out of school for a doctor’s appointment.”

Nurse Stensby also understands the challenges many families face in accessing high-quality healthcare. By leveraging SchoolMed, she bridges that gap and makes a meaningful impact.

“Without SchoolMed, some students might not see a provider at all and could end up feeling worse,” she explained. “Before we had SchoolMed, many students would simply return to class without the care they needed.”

From providing rapid flu and strep testing to teaching diabetic students how to manage their care, Nurse Stensby embodies what it means to be a true School Health Advocate.

Thank you, Nurse Stensby, for prioritizing your students’ health and using SchoolMed to close critical healthcare gaps in Joshua ISD. Your dedication to creating healthier, stronger futures for your students inspires us all!
